What is the Bel unit?

The Bel (symbol: B) is a seldom-used logarithmic unit. A more commonly used unit is the decibel, which is one-tenth of a bell and indicates the ratio of a physical quantity relative to a specified reference level. Examples are gain and loss of electrical signals in electronic equipment and levels of sound.
